O que é POLEMOLOGIA?

Polemologia é estudo da guerra como fenômeno social autônomo; análise de suas formas, causas, efeitos etc.

Para esclarecer mais sobre esse tema, reproduzo o texto do Professo Doutor Francisco Proença Garcia, da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, que ocupa a cadeira de Polemologia daquela instituição.

Professor Doutor Francisco Proença Garcia

A Guerra foi e permanece como uma das maiores preocupações da humanidade. Este tema, que inspirou a literatura, a arte e a música, tem sido uma preocupação de longa data entre os historiadores, analistas, políticos e militares. 

A Guerra é um fenómeno global, com expressão em todas as regiões do mundo, da Europa à Oceania, das Américas à Ásia, passando por África, sendo a problemática da conflitualidade global permanente reconhecida como central por todos os estudiosos das Relações Internacionais.

As Guerras e as ameaças à Segurança desafiam todos  os aspectos das sociedades onde ocorrem. Nesta ordem de ideias, os  estudos da guerra são imprescindíveis para dar resposta a um conjunto de  perguntas complexas como: 

1. Porquê o surgimento da guerra? 

2. Como tem variado o carácter da guerra ao longo do tempo?  

3. Podem as lições da História facilitar a compreensão da conflitualidade contemporânea e apoiar na determinação de novos riscos? 

4. O uso da Força nas Relações Internacionais ainda é válido?  

5. Como é que os novos desafios como a transformação da Defesa, a revolução na informação e as operações de paz afetam o uso da força nas relações internacionais? 

Os Estudos de Polemologia são assuntos pluridisciplinares desafiantes que determinam o recurso a outras áreas das Ciências Sociais como, por exemplo, a História, a Antropologia Cultural, a Sociologia, as Relações Internacionais, a Estratégia, a Ciência Política, e o Direito. 

Pretende-se com esta disciplina apresentar o  state-of-the-art da Polemologia nas seguintes áreas temáticas: 

1. A Polemologia. Subsídios para o estudo científico da Guerra. Os padrões históricos das guerras e dos conflitos. As tipologias e o espectro da guerra.

2. As guerras globais e a revolução militar na época contemporânea. Os Estudos Estratégicos e a Estratégia Militar. Os grandes pensadores militares do século XIX. A Guerra nas sociedades industriais desenvolvidas. 

3. As Grandes Guerras Mundiais. O impacto das novas tecnologias na Guerra. A actividade militar na 1ª e 2ª Guerras Mundiais. A evolução técnica e do pensamento estratégico até ao início da Guerra-Fria.

4. A Ordem dos pactos militares. A Guerra e a Estratégia no período da Guerra-Fria. A Estratégia da subversão e da contra-subversão.

5. O Fenómeno da Guerra no novo século. As guerras  irregulares e a transformação da natureza dos conflitos armados. As novas ameaças transnacionais e a segurança. A acção estratégica para fazer face às novas ameaças.

6. A Transformação da Defesa e a  Network Centric Warfare. A visão europeia e norte-americana. A privatização da Defesa. A nova economia de Guerra. A Guerra e os media. O Plano do Curso abrange um vasto universo de matérias (...).
